Meteor Flash Over Utah

Today when  I woke up, I hopped on Facebook (because isn’t that what all people do first thing in the morning?), and I saw that my cousin from Utah had posted this:

…I just got home from work. As I was walking towards the door, I saw three bright flashes of light. I thought it must be a vehicle’s headlights, so I turned around, but there were not cars on the road. All of a sudden the whole sky lit up for about 3 seconds. When I say “lit up” I mean it LITERALLY looked light daytime.

I remembered that the meteor shower was supposed to happen last night, so I did a bit of googling and found some really awesome videos of the meteor flash that had happened. And just let me say thank goodness for security cameras because these videos are amazing.

RT vs Via: How and when to use them.

In the Twitterverse there has been the on going battle between two syntaxes of reposting a user’s tweet. These two are “RT @username: Original Tweet Text” and ” Reposter’s text (via @username). The “RT” vs the “via”. The “awesome” vs the “sucky unless used correctly”. I don’t dislike either one, as I use both. I think both have their special place in Twitter.

First off let me bash on via. Too often times I have been in this situation: I am looking through my timeline and see a post from someone that says something like this…. “I’m so excited! I’m pregnant!” By reading that you are thinking “Wow that is so cool!” But then you realized that the poster is a guy… So you are little confused. But then you read further on and see the “(via @pregnantgirl)” and THEN you realize that your guy friend is not actually a scientific wonder as you once thought only moments ago but he was reposting a tweet incorrectly. Too many times have I read something thinking it was coming from one person, when in reality, it was just a repost of another person’s tweet.

Now that via has been bashed around a bit, I’ll see if I can cheer him up. I DO think via has its place in a tweet. I think the via syntax should be used to cite a source and not to repost a tweet in verbatim, or word for word. For example, say someone posted a link to a video that he found hilarious. Here is what he posted “OMG GUYS I JUST SAW THIS ***** VIDEO! *****. SO ***** HARDCORE! http://tr.im/mPAr ” So you watch the video, and you too found it extremely funny, but you don’t like to use vulgar language. So obviously you wouldn’t want to use a word for word repost. This is where the via syntax comes in. You can, in your own words, say that this video is really funny. i.e. “Wow, I couldn’t stop laughing after I watched this video http://tr.im/mPAr (via @ISwearTooMuch)”

Use via the way it should be used.

For word for word reposts, where you want your followers to see exactly what the original poster said, the RT syntax is much better. The reader can right off see that the post is a verbatim repost and was said by someone else, and not by you. In the @pregnantgirl situation, if the user would have tweeted “RT @pregnantgirl: I’m so excited! I’m pregnant!” or “Awesome! Helga is expecting! (via @pregnantgirl)” there would be no confusion and everything would be awesome.

In short, the RT syntax should be used for verbatim, word for word, reposts. And via should be used to summarize, cite, or put in your own words, what another user has posted.

Four finger gestures on the old MacBook Pros? Yes!

A few weeks ago I installed the beta for Snow Leopard. The first thing I noticed is that it added four finger gestures, and it worked perfectly on my old MacBook Pro. I decided to downgrade back to Leopard for a number of reasons; but I still wanted those four finger guestures. Knowing that my hardware is capable of these four finger gestures, I started looking for a way to get them working in Leopard. I finally found a way how, and here’s how you do it.

Sharing Internet from Mac to Xbox

Yesterday I spent hours and hours trying to share my internet connection from my Mac to my Xbox so I could connect to Xbox Live. I wanted to share it from my Airport to my Ethernet which would then go to the Xbox. After hours of Googling I finally figured out a solution.  Here’s a step by step on  how to do it:

The Pirate Bay trial Day 4 part 2

After lunch, Frederik Neij’s hearing continued with Army General (I jest) Danowsky. He started by asking about the 8.5% (interest?)  that went to Calle, someone who TPB bought a computer from. Neij stated that he knew nothing of the financial matters and that it did not interest him. His focus was on the technological side of the Bay. Danowsky had no further questions and passed it on to Neij’s lawyer.

The Pirate Bay trial day 4. Now the fun stuff begins.

First Pirate Bay member to talk was Fredrik Neij (TiAMO), who sounded very nervous to be there (who wouldn’t?), and had a list of points to make written down. Poor guy. He stated how he was part of The Pirate Bay due to the technical challenge of keeping a site and tracker up. He then went on to say how there are thousands of torrents being uploaded each day, and there would be no way to monitor the content of them all. We obviously know that they have no desire to, he is making this point purely in defense of himself and of the site. Niej went on to talk about the tracker and told the Court that it was totally seperate from The Pirate Bay (thus the different name) and that 50% of the torrents tracked were not from The Pirate Bay. The other 50%  are  20+ other sites that him and Oded Daniel are working on that use the same tracker. Oded Daniel was a man that they met early on who wanted to buy ads on The Pirate Bay sites.

The Pirate Bay's spectrial, day one.

The Pirate Bay crew has poked fun at their trial by naming it “spectrial” , a cross between spectacle and trial. They think of this as entertainment and jest. Day one of the trial in Stockholm has concluded and the hype was amazing. Especially on Twitter. Coming straight from the courtroom was a live audio feed which was broadcasted online for all to hear. Those who listened to the stream posted updates via Twitter with the hashtag #spectrial. Because of the language barrier, there was a need for translators to let those of other languages have a chance to participate and know how the trial is going. The best of which was @sofia who stayed up all night (located in San Francisco) tweeting rough translations and summing up the proceedings inside the court house.  By viewing the Twitter Search page of #spectrial, one could see live, real-time updates, post their opinions, ask questions, and of course, poke fun at the whole thing.

DRM and Piracy

Here is an article I wrote for my newspaper class in High School. It states a lot of things that are obvious, mostly because my audience was not tech-savvy. Because of this my teacher made me define almost EVERYTHING. Sorry for that, but apart from that I think it contains a few things that aren’t so obvious.

On Freshman Academy

I got home (whatever that is…?) in Driggs, a couple days ago because Freshman Academy at BYU-Idaho just finished so I think I best tell a bit about it. Freshman Academy is basically a 6 week introduction to college. I had to apply for it and those selected (my guess is everyone that applied) were able to attend. During those 6 weeks you attend 3 classes.
